1. Scrap steel is a low-carbon resource
Scrap steel can reduce the generation of wastewater, waste residue, and exhaust gas in pre iron processes such as ironmaking, coking, and sintering, with wastewater accounting for 76%, waste residue accounting for 72%, and exhaust gas accounting for 86%. If the tailings generated during the iron ore beneficiation process and the dust generated during coking and sintering processes are added, the emission of waste residue can be reduced by 97%. The use of scrap steel in steelmaking can significantly reduce the generation of "three wastes" and lower carbon emissions.
Steelmaking can be divided into "long process" and "short process" from the perspective of production processes. Long process generally refers to converter steelmaking, with iron ore (pig iron) as the main raw material and scrap steel as a supplement. Short process generally refers to electric furnace steelmaking, with scrap steel as the main raw material and pig iron as a supplement.
Large steel production enterprises, starting from iron ore to coking, sintering, ironmaking, and steelmaking, mainly concentrate energy consumption and pollution emissions in the entire process of ironmaking and pre ironmaking, accounting for 60% of the comprehensive energy consumption. Compared with iron ore, using scrap steel can save this part of energy and significantly reduce the comprehensive energy consumption of steel production.

3. Scrap steel is a circular and renewable resource
Steel - forming - use - scrap, with a cycle of every 8-30 years, can be infinitely recycled and reused with low natural wear and tear. For every 1 ton of scrap steel used, the consumption of 1.7 tons of concentrate powder can be reduced, while reducing the mining of 4.3 tons of raw ore and the emission of 2.6 tons of steel tailings slag.
In addition, using more scrap steel and less iron ore is an important measure to alleviate the current situation of high iron ore prices. Increasing the supply capacity of scrap steel is an important way to alleviate dependence on iron ore.
4. Scrap steel is an important steelmaking resource
Scrap steel is different from other renewable resources such as copper, aluminum, plastic, and paper. It does not decrease its physical and chemical performance indicators and product quality with increasing cycles. In a sense, steelmaking is the process of purifying molten steel. Compared to the primary resource iron ore, scrap steel is a high-quality steelmaking resource and a high-quality raw material resource that can replace the gradually depleted iron ore resources.
